The general problem is how to deal with depression - but first, what is depression? To be specific, when sadness tends to linger no matter how much effort one does to make it go away, it can be depression. The feeling of depression may be a grave feeling of sadness, as if the world is at an end, or a feeling of emptiness, the absence of emotions.

The term "depression" is generally applied when the sad feeling becomes a deterrent to one's daily normal activities such as work, or if it has a negative impact on one's relationships with other people. Those who suffer from it need to learn how to deal with depression. 

The symptoms of depression include concentration problems, loss of energy, difficulty in sleeping, changes in mood, appetite or weight, loss of happiness, irritability, agitation, and a general feeling of pain in the body. The Possible Causes of Depression

Depression has no single cause. It is known that a multitude of factors can cause this condition. A cause of depression for one may not be a cause for another. Though there are no definitive causes for it, there are identified risk factors that can suggest if one is predisposed to experiencing depression. How to deal with depression depends on what factors has caused it.

Such risk factors include a genetic predisposition to depression. A family that has experienced levels of depression is a high risk especially if one or more of your relatives have been diagnosed with clinical depression.

Another is a low social and economic status. The lack of social support makes it more likely for people who live in isolation, or have few friends and relatives to get help from, to experience depression. People who lack sufficient income or have not been able to finish their studies are all prone to depression; they are more likely as well to lack the skills on how to deal with depression.

Advanced age and gender may also have a bearing on a person. Studies have shown that women are more prone to depression than men, although, they know how to deal with depression better than men do. Likewise, old age can contribute to feelings of depression to people.

Depression can also be one of the symptoms of an underlying psychological condition that a person may be unaware of. People who are afflicted with personality disorders are more prone to depression than others. A very stressful experience will be enough to overwhelm the skills of a person in how to deal with depression, which can result in a breakdown.
 
Dealing with Depression

Depression is not that easy to deal with. Aside from the need to be constantly aware of the symptoms, a person with depression might be helped with talk therapy. A professional or someone close to him can provide him this type of treatment. A psychiatrist, family doctor, a counselor and even a clergyman can administer talk therapy. It does not have to be always in a therapy clinic. In fact, studies have shown that treatment of depression is more effective when the patient is at home.

Talk therapy is used to treat mild depression but using antidepressants can treat more severe forms of depression. A class of drugs called SSRIs is used to treat these serious forms of depression. Though these drugs will greatly improve the symptoms of depression, people also tend to suffer from side effects.  

A person can differentiate between a mild and serious depression by identifying its possible cause. If you feel depressed because of a death in the family or other serious but specific events, you are only suffering from mild depression and the feeling is fairly normal due to the mentioned circumstances. However, feeling depressed repeatedly in a cycle while having no reason at all means that you are suffering from a more serious form of depression.
